Ways To Enhance Language Learning

Learning a language is not a matter of incorporating a set
of rules and building up a large vocabulary. Traditional
methods of learning a foreign language have been changing
through time; and a great number of effective techniques
have been developed to enable students to acquire a second
language as fast and easy as possible. Thus, the
students' command of a language will be judge not by how
much they know, but how well they can perform in public.
To that purpose, individuals who have a basic knowledge of
a second language can adopt different approaches in
order to improve their learning and language skills.

The old school textbooks that present sentence patterns as
rules are outdated since they are quite boring. However, the
self-study books and textbooks teach new patterns by
contextualising them as they will be used in daily life.
Also efforts are made to make the books as interesting as
possible to hold the attention of the student. This way the
monotony of drill work is considerably reduced. The texts
that carry corresponding pictures are more appealing and far
more effective because they make the learning process much
more enjoyable.

For those who like reading, magazines and books are useful
elements that promote the learning of words and
structures of the second language. Individuals can read
about topics and articles of their interest, while
learning the jargon of different professions and
activities. There are various kinds of magazines and
students can choose what they will read about. In case
that in your country you are unable to find magazines or
newspapers written in the language of your preference,
you can phone or e-mail some publishers or bookshops from
a country where your second language is spoken, and
subscribe to receive a monthly or weekly volume.

Technological developments may act as useful tools in the
second language learning process. For movie fans, DVDs
are one of the most interesting as well as entertaining
tools for making learning an enjoyable experience. You
can start the learning activity by watching your favorite
movies or the last box office success. DVDs have the
capacity to store up to eight language subtitles.
Therefore, if available, you can read the subtitles in the
language you are learning. It is also possible to select
the audio, so that you can hear and read what the
characters say in the language you prefer.

The best way to learn a language is to visit and stay some
time in a country where your favorite second language is
spoken. Here you will get the feel of the language and when
you hear everyone speaking the language you pick it up
effortlessly. Of course, it also provides an excellent
opportunity to talk to native speakers, while learning about
their lifestyles and society. This way you get to practice
the language structures you have been studying. Visits to
museums, restaurants, or theaters allow you to meet people
and interact with them. For all you know, you might make
friends with some of them and keep in touch via e-mails or
telephone when you come back home.
